Democrats embraced Trump anti-immigration policy, cynically used antisemitism accusations to defend their support for genocide, threw their arms around cops, crowed about having the deadliest military on Earth, told the poor to eat shit, sat back while AIPAC attacked Black progressives, campaigned with Republicans, and shrugged at a hateful onslaught of anti-trans ads.
And millions of their voters stayed home.
I don't think "wokeness" was the problem.

Decades of Democratic intransigence on issues that matter to people, hiding behind the pretext of insurmountable procedural barriers that seemingly only exist when they're in power, has also had a corrosive effect on Americans' faith in democracy and driven increasing numbers of people toward the idea of an authoritarian "solution."
