With the shit about to go down in the US, I want to make a pitch to my non-tech social groups to get off WhatsApp. What would you do? Is Signal the right recommendation, or is it potentially subvertable?

@Floppy Signal is a US organisation with servers in the US, operating under US jurisdiction. They themselves claim to save a _lot_ less stuff than most alternative services though, and in most cases they are not going to be the place where subversion hits, but rather Google/Apple (depending on if your phone runs iOS/Android).

@Floppy For many regular social groups it's going to be the best compromise between security, privacy, ease of use, and widespread availability.

@Floppy Signal is the least plausibly subvertible messaging system with mainstream appealing feature set and ease of onboarding and connecting.

Cwtch is completely non subvertible and will hopefully eventually be mainstream friendly.

@floppy it's the best current option *to me*, and I do contribute from time to time.

However, I cannot find up-to-date info on where they currently host.

@rgarner It doesn't really matter where they host since they are an US organisation, and the US government claims jurisdiction of servers and data of US organisations no matter where they operate.

And yes, this is legislation that directly clashes with EU data protection laws, with the current status being that this contradiction is mostly just ignored by everyone involved. @Floppy

@rgarner @Floppy Where they host *doesn't matter*. The servers have no access to your communications. The only threat is the org being forced to push malicious app updates, which I don't see happening.
