I understand the theory but not the practice of how mastodon works. I have several accounts on several servers. I think that's doing it wrong, but I'm not sure. This is going to be a fun ride...

Or if you have a smaller/single user instance, you will find it very hard to keep up with threads/see nice posts as your instance is unaware of them
Case in point if you click A7's post and view the external link you'll see replies you didn't know about. -

a7 (a7@miss.mouse.services)'s status on Friday, 11-Nov-2022 13:31:06 JST a7 @kitpickles@universeodon.com the fediverse is the proper name for the network, mastodon is a piece of software that is part of the fediverse, the protocol itself is ostatus or activity pub and some other ones.
The major available server software is pleroma, misskey, mastodon, akkoma
They all send messages to each other, most have 3 timelines available for users “local/public” or something of the such which is just your server, “global/whole known network” or some other names which is messages from all servers your server sees, then your own timeline which is like people you follow, they can be on your server or other people’s servers -

Kit Pickles (kitpickles@universeodon.com)'s status on Friday, 11-Nov-2022 13:31:08 JST Kit Pickles @a7 Ok, so that truly blew my mind. I had no idea that this also speaks to other networks (is that the right word?) in the fediverse. I have a lot to learn and this is going to be a lot of fun. Thanks so much for the info!

a7 (a7@miss.mouse.services)'s status on Friday, 11-Nov-2022 13:31:10 JST a7 @kitpickles@universeodon.com its good to have backups, but those accounts are connected in no way. You can export and import follows for your backup and secondary accounts.

Kit Pickles (kitpickles@universeodon.com)'s status on Friday, 11-Nov-2022 13:31:10 JST Kit Pickles @a7 Oh, interesting. Thank you for that. So the server I'm currently on, for instance, could be something very niche, but still have access to the Mastodon network as a whole through the Federated feed?
