I'm here 🤷 with the "BlueSky has won and fedi lost" narratives. Sure it's a little disappointing to see folks flocking to another VC clowncar, but we'll still be here when their next house burns down. In the meantime we'll probably have them increasingly well bridged so the next migration isn't even that painful.

Because the people making it fundamentally don't understand the motives or values of the people involved, or the capacity to migrate.

acb (acb@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 17-Nov-2024 20:33:04 JST acb @dalias Though servers keep sunsetting all the time (botsin.space being a recent case). If traffic drops off, more admins of small servers might decide that they could divert their time and resources to something more useful, and larger servers that rely on donations may shut down due to lack of funding.

Alex@rtnVFRmedia Suffolk UK (vfrmedia@social.tchncs.de)'s status on Monday, 18-Nov-2024 14:29:04 JST Alex@rtnVFRmedia Suffolk UK @dalias @acb it seems most of the time when a larger Fedi server shuts down, its not due to lack of interest - quite the opposite (usually the cost of keeping the server running and the work involved for the admin/security is too much). Fedi is quite resource intensive (particularly due to the constant demands for graphics heavy content, fairly high resolution pictures/videos)
