Because companies and media are looking at the number of followers they have on different social media plattforms and making decisions to stay or leave based on that, partially.
On X, they might still have a lot of followers (I argue: for historical reasons), but a chunk of these are very probably inactive accounts by now.
Still, they look at the numbers and many decide to stay. Which in turn makes their followers stay, which in turn... you get it.

But manually unfollowing is also feasible: I just did that with a following of over 600.
(Of course, you could alternatively delete your entire account.)
