seeing a renewed debate about mastodon vs bluesky today and one thing that always sticks out for me about these discussions is a complete lack of a shared vision for what the fediverse should become in the future.

some people want an exact twitter clone complete with all its bad profit motivated features

some want it to be able to influence elections

some want it to serve the purpose of shining light on injustices

some want it to be good at promoting whatever your product or service is

some want it to be a refuge for misfits

others want it to be a bastion of unregulated freedom of speech

but one thing is certain: it can’t and won’t be all things to all people.
