@wallamidyl Actually, and not to disagree with the spirit of your post because I very much do agree with you, but white people don't see themselves as "white Americans." Just "Americans." It's everyone else, everyone marginalize and othered from that norm that they identify as "different" and or "less" than that.
In white supremacists societies, white people truly do not see their own whiteness; only its absence in others.
