So I am in a local-ish book circle with friends here in Sweden, we are reading kind, queer, feel-goody sff mainly. It'll be my time to pick a book in a few months, and I am thinking maybe A Master of Djinn by P. Djeli Clark, to tug the group out of its whiteness for a while. I'd love some suggestions for other books that loosely fill the criteria that are not set in a european-ish/western setting with white people, by poc authors, if you guys have read anything good?

    #bookrecs please

@silhelm Jemisin isn't known for feel-good stories necessarily, but The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms is excellent all the same, and not nearly a downer on the level of the Broken Earth trilogy.

Leckie's stuff (Ancillary Justice and sequels) is great as well imo, though YMMV on whether you think it breaks out of whiteness despite most characters being described as some flavour of dark-skinned. Likewise the Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells.

The Jasmine Throne was great and queer, but not feelgood

@silhelm gotcha, another tip might be A Memory Called Empire, which is deeply informed by the authors scholarship in Byzantine history

@pettter I include the western type cultures and takes in "whiteness", which definitely includes Murderbot (which I have read multiple times and love). It's why I think Master of Djinn - or something even further into another culture than the Eurocentric - could be a good fit.

@silhelm Leckie's Radch empire is intersting as well, being deeply polytheist semi-capitalist, but with heavy emphasis on clientage connections between extended families, as well as the whole gender thing.
