feld (feld@friedcheese.us)'s status on Wednesday, 13-Nov-2024 05:16:34 JST feld @dynode @collectifission @kolchak if they enabled Federation for all accounts it would crush the rest of the fediverse in traffic very quickly, especially for federated Deletes which get delivered to every server you know about because you can't be sure who has a copy of the post
And then you'd have bots auto following Threads accounts and boosting them onto various servers and very quickly Threads would consume all our capacity unless so you'd have to block them.
Just think about it with celebrities -- they'll have 100k replies to some stupid selfie they posted and then your server tries to fetch the entire thread? That's not gonna go well, you'll have to pull the profiles of each user just to render the thread AND their dumb emoji reply activities
*Or* they can just let users opt-in to federation so the growth of their federation traffic is more controlled
ActivityPub was not well designed for scale or accepting a server with a billion users to just suddenly enter the network.-

Johan Blyatstra (dynode@greennuclear.online)'s status on Wednesday, 13-Nov-2024 05:16:36 JST Johan Blyatstra Are they even serious about federation? Meta crap is about shoving ads into people's faces. Why would they want to connect with something where they can't do that?

Emil Jacobs - Collectifission (collectifission@greennuclear.online)'s status on Wednesday, 13-Nov-2024 05:16:37 JST Emil Jacobs - Collectifission @kolchak the guy is heading a ‘fediverse implementation’ for a company with an unlimited budget. Yet where open source projects run by volunteers can do implent ActivityPub in a few weeks, Meta is at it for 1.5 years now. It’s absurd.
