Frank Jordans (fj@det.social)'s status on Tuesday, 12-Nov-2024 22:55:01 JST Frank Jordans @jon Booking cross--border rail trips has become harder, not easier, in recent years. That needs to change. But in most cases the idea that flights are cheaper than rail journey is nonsense, at least in my experience. The one connection that always breaks the bank, though, is Eurostar. A single fare from Brussels to London costs more than three long-distance, high-speed journeys elsewhere on the continent. It's not sustainable.

Jon Worth (jon@gruene.social)'s status on Tuesday, 12-Nov-2024 22:55:02 JST Jon Worth BTW I see a bunch of people posting about this BBC piece about international rail in Europe and why it doesn't work better. It's fine explaining there is a problem, but has pretty much nothing on 1) why that problem really exists, and 2) what we can do about it. So it's not wrong, just not very new https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20241101-why-is-european-train-travel-so-expensive #CrossBorderRail

Even though the bus is empty, there’s masses of luggage space, they try to charge me €30 because my bike is too large
That’s almost 3x the ticket price (€12.70)
In the end the driver (who spoke only Russian - translation apps helped) let me on for €25 extra

Jon Worth (jon@gruene.social)'s status on Wednesday, 13-Nov-2024 03:27:00 JST Jon Worth I’d so, so like to spend more time in the Baltics. Just to explore. A holiday. Instead of racing through here as fast as a knackered Soviet-era DMU will convey me…

Jon Worth (jon@gruene.social)'s status on Wednesday, 13-Nov-2024 03:27:04 JST Jon Worth Pro tip: DON‘T have a beer with old friends in Rīga, gossip too long, think “I’ll go to the loo on the train” and it’s an ancient DR1AM DMU with a it-all-lands-on-the-track loo… that the train manager won’t open!
Edit: ah he finally opened it. Phew!
