Lately I find myself going ever-deeper into Apple's ecosystem. There are real reasons for it, but I still can't help but to want to change that all, again. https://chriswiegman.com/2024/11/a-bigger-apple/
@chris this sounds great. Despite the Fediverse still makes an impression that they don't like seeing someone going down the apple, windows or any other lane than Linux.
I haven't checked out the apple lane just because it's all the ecosystem that costs. And once you are in, you depend on that 😅
@Zoidtes I think it is... that's what my EU friends point out 🤷
If all I needed was a laptop then Linux is kinda awesome. I really did enjoy using it. The only way I could share data easily on my phone with it, though, was in the Google ecosystem and that just isn't where I want to be anymore.
@chris ah it's even cheaper in the US? I thought it's more or less the same but sure, apple goes the America first lane here. 😂
Well Linux is okay, things work but not everything. But I have to admit that I'm not using Windows that much anymore. It's still just for gaming mostly
@chris Lately, I find myself wanting to become more independent from Apple. But as you said: It's hard, because the whole family is on Apple devices/iCloud. It's just so convenient.
Still, I am researching, making lists with open source alternatives, looking at Linux compatible laptops, etc. 😊
Switching would definitely be painful and not worth it right now. But I at least want to have a backup plan, if Apple goes into full evil corp mode.
@florianziegler I definitely get that sentiment. When I did leave Apple, though, I just wound up with most of my data in Google. Tried cutting that out and wound up with my mom so frustrated trying to video call us that she was in tears on Christmas.
For all its [many] faults, at least this works. I suspect that when they go full evil so will almost any other company we'll need to tech too.
@chris I’m all in on Apple again as well. I replaced my Linux laptop with an Air, got a new phone and watch. Apple One, the only thing I don’t have is Apple TV. I still prefer Roku.
