My next book, "A Conventional Boy" (coming January 7th) is all about the consequences of the Satanic D&D Panic … in a world where Lovecraft's elder gods are real. (Also: what-if Laundry but also LitRPG/progression fantasy?)

There's an afterword to provide the historic context if you don't remember playing D&D in the 80s and being shit-scared of the evangelical loons coming for you.

@nilz Most of my German audience read them in English. My German publisher gave up—their core market are older, less-educated folks who want traditional space opera. (Think Perry Rhodan.)

        Orkney child abuse scandal
The Orkney child abuse scandal began on 27 February 1991, when social workers and police removed children—five boys and four girls, aged eight to fifteen and all from the families of English "incomers"—from their homes on the island of South Ronaldsay in Orkney, Scotland, because of allegations of child abuse. The children denied that any abuse had occurred, and medical examinations did not reveal any evidence of abuse. Background The 'W' family The 'W' family, two parents and fifteen children, moved from Rousay to South Ronaldsay, Orkney in 1985. In 1985, the Orkney Social Work Department became aware of concerns regarding abuse towards the children by the father, and on 16 March 1987 the father pled guilty to child sexual abuse and was sentenced to seven years imprisonment. The family remained in contact with Social Work, and in 1989 further concern was raised following allegations by one of the female W children. Eight of the W children were taken to places of safety as a result of allegations of sexual abuse by siblings on 22 June and Place...

@cstross Did the UK see much of that? (the Satanic Panic, I mean, not the Elder Gods). I figured it was mostly a North American thing.

@sipior The "British variant of religious fruitcake" who were involved in the Satanic panic were offshoots of American evangelical groups. Luckily the UK is vastly less religious than the USA (and Scotland far less so than Englandshire—England skews more religious because London has a huge immigrant population, mainly from more religious countries).

@cstross Thank you for the (admittedly disturbing) pointer. Were D&D players ever harassed by the British variant of religious fruitcake?
