Clara Peeters. Still Life with Nuts, Candy and Flowers, 1611.
A rare female painter in the Dutch Golden Age, Peeters was overlooked and marginalized. We don't even know anything of her birth and death. But by inserting her reflection over and over into her pronk paintings, she ensured that at least in her own works she could not be ignored indefinitely. It could be seen as a playful sort of signature, or insistent cleverness, or as subversion and reclamation, or even rebellion.
