2. Dear Foreigner, A few weeks ago, while visiting New York, I spoke with a man at a museum. "Costa Rica, such a beautiful country. Some of my relatives are thinking of moving there if Trump wins." (laughter). My laugh was nervous-Another one. I've lost count of how many times l've heard this. For a moment, I disconnect from reality. Most people who move to Costa Rica (or any Latin American country) after COVID or as digital nomads are chasing an illusion of paradise, unaware of the damage they're causing to the country and the region. Costa Rica, in 2024, has faced one of the worst years of water scarcity, illegal real estate developments, deforestation, wetland destruction, displacement of local communities, and increased drug trafficking. 4. From 2020 to 2023, property prices in Guanacaste's coastal areas skyrocketed by up to 400%, according to the Observatory of Tourism, Migration, and Sustainable Development (OBTUR-UNA). We're becoming tenants in our own country. If you want to come here to make money like Latinos do, fine. Costa Rica has the second- longest working hours in the world, according to the OECD and ILO.
