    Email tech question/help

I'd like to keep a copy of my emails on my local (windows) machine as a backup for my Gmail.

    Years ago, I used Thunderbird.

Is that still what folks recommend? Other options?

    Thanks!

@LexPendragon @LJ why did maildir never catch on? Mbox seems so... Backwards complex?

@andreasio @LexPendragon @LJ when you have 400,000 emails in a single email folder Maildir becomes a right pain in the ass as it crushes your filesystem's capabilities to cope

@LJ Google Take-Out will give you a big zip of it all.

      https://takeout.google.com/

It gives you MBOX files you can open in Thunderbird.

@andreasio @LexPendragon @LJ filesystems definitely fall over when you have that many files in a single directory

MBox is easier as it is a single file. You can make pretty clean updates to it on a traditional filesystem; on a CoW filesystem each change is a more expensive operation of course.

There are tradeoffs. Having it in a real database is the best but then it's not really portable and in most situations will have a negative performance impact.

      🤷

@feld @LexPendragon @LJ are you sure? But mailbox wants all that in one big file.... It should be much easier to handle in maildir and then indexed maybe in sqlite? At least that's what i thought...
