   which essentially means that when you pay trimet fare, you are paying your entire fare to the guards to not hassle you, plus they take a little extra from the taxes as a supplement.

     How much is spent maintaining the infrastructure to issue fares?

     Machines to buy one-off fares or cards with a balance, network services, mobile payment methods, machines to take the fares on each bus, etc.

     How about the cumulative impacts of fuel wasted waiting for someone to dig their fare out of their pockets...

     And for relatively small transactions, which tend to have high administrative overhead!

     Charging fares is costly!
