Oof, filter cartridges for our kitchen tap have gone up by 50% in 2 years 😲 I know inflation has been high, but not that high. Could be profiteering or Brexit or both I guess. I always buy 2 years worth at a time because of the bulk discount but it definitely stings. Hard to know if the off-brand alternatives are any good, which is I guess how they get you
@sinbad oh neat, never heard of that. We got a water softener (is that the right word?) installed in the new house, which removes calcium. I’ve been loving it, but there are no cartridges, it’s just hooked up directly to the water mains and filters out the calcium through a reaction with resin (IIRC). Only need to replenish a salt supply evert ~6 months or so which is dirt cheap. Looks like the cartridge thing does a lot more than just calcium though.
@rovarma it’s kind of a separate thing, ours doesn’t do softening, it just cleans up the taste & removes any particulates. We don’t have particularly hard water but I do use a separate softener in my espresso machine because that’s a bit more sensitive
@rovarma@sinbad the nicer filters also take out microplastics and pharmaceuticals.
I’ve had mixed luck with off brand filters. Including the ones that claim they meet NSF standards. I was using one for years just fine and then they decided to cut corners.
