About me and Nazis:
Back in 1906 my great-grandpa and his family emigrated to the UK from the part of the Russian empire that became Poland in 1918.
A bunch of their relatives said "naah, life's good" and stayed home in the old country.
In 1939, Nazis invaded and by 1943 they were all dead.
It turns out that FAFO is a REALLY BAD way of dealing with Nazis.
And Trump and J. D. Vance are playing a medley from Hitler's hymn book, at ever-increasing volume.
You know how this ends—if you let it.

Footnote about Nazis and their targets:
You might think you're safe.
But … they start with their political rivals, and the trans, then the rest of the LGBT+. Then it's on to "auslanders"—folks who aren't the pale patriarchal penis people. Women get beaten back into the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant to make soldiers for the fatherland. Jews, blacks, asians, indians, hispanics, EVERY minority—even though collectively we're the majority. Finally they eat their own.
I repeat: NOBODY IS SAFE.

If Trump wins, world war three will break out within 18 months.
I'm not joking.
He'll throw Ukraine under the Russian tank tracks, encouraging Putin. Who will roll into Moldova and then Poland and the Baltic Republics and maybe even Finland, because when the only tool you've got is a war machine everything looks like a target. Putin wants to rebuild the old Russian empire: which means NATO will be at war.

I'm not worried about that because every indicator I've seen says the support isn't there. I'm worried about after because every indicator I've seen suggest the asshole will foment insurrection again.

@cstross I think it’s abysmally clear that the racists had to wait until ever WW2 veteran had died before they got any traction. Can you imagine Bob Dole, Daniel Inoue, Bush Sr, or even Ronald Reagan putting up with anybody spouting the current Trump xenophobia? I cannot

I wish there was a concise enough way to communicate this. As Berlin was falling, the Nazis were calling up their blonde, blue-eyed Aryan 12-year olds to be cannon fodder against the advancing Russians.
To fascists, everyone is a tool to employ in pursuit of their power. Everyone is instrumentalized.
My greatest worry is the reality that a fair number of people enjoy being instrumentalised.

@Remittancegirl @Yendolosch "Legally speaking" and "in the Third Reich" are two phrases that don't belong on the same continent. (They had conscription, no age limit. Their solution to conscientious objectors was a firing squad. The law was whatever the führer decreed. IIRC the youngest "soldiers" in May 1945 were just eight years old ...)

I'm not sure you can describe that as volunteering.
Legally speaking, 12 year olds are not capable of giving consent.

To be fair, a lot of the blonde, blue-eyed Aryan 12-year olds were volunteering to die for the fatherland, because by that time, they had been indoctrinated for years. You can teach people to "enjoy being instrumentalized" for the cause.
The world was lucky in the end that the Nazis sacrificed their young so young, instead of having the next generation gain the power to sacrifice the world in their own turn.

@cstross My graduate advisor was a holocaust survivor. His father was a German first and Jew second and a WWI Iron Cross winner. His dad was sure it was all a mistake right up until he went into the showers—the sheer ability of people to refuse to believe what's happening right in front of their eyes horrifies me.
