“I will never again devote my energies to building up an audience on a platform whose management can sever my relationship to that audience at will.”

This is a very good piece from Cory Doctorow (@pluralistic) on #Bluesky fishing the #enshittification button partnering with crypto gifts and this is also proving why although I have a account, I'm really not into it due to the fact that they can surely collapse at any time. This is one such example.

This section of the piece is one of the major reasons why Cory (@pluralistic), me, and many others are very skeptical of #Bluesky: the inability to leave it and go to another server or service.

      That's #enshittification.

It gets even worse for #Bluesky.

Here's two good threads on the platform's ownership and it's basically a must-read.

Mark my words: #enshittification is coming in 2-4 years since they need to find ways to make money plus the reasons at the start of this thread makes is a ticking time bomb waiting to happen, much like the dead birdsite.

@joeo10 I was tempted to sign up for Bluesky, but when I saw the original owners I balked. Corporate hegemony is bad. The same people who own all the other shitty platforms, like Meta also own Bluesky.

@fmhilton Yep. It sets up for not good things down the road, like history repeats itself and it happens a lot.

Although I have a Bluesky account, I share as little personal stuff as I can like signing up via a proxy email address and not a real one for example.

@joeo10 Plus, with Elon having a potentially influential spot in the Wh, it can get very tricky because he'll try to buy every social platform to make sure the 'haters' are under his control. Don't say it won't happen..just look at the past election for that nonsense.

This is a nice post on why #Bluesky isn't decentralized nor federated plus whether it it comes in the future....or not at all as it could very well be mired in #enshittification down the road although it remains to be seen.

This is also a good thread on how #Bluesky could be a victim of their own growth and success, especially becoming (as of right now) just another centralized service that could very well be yet another deadbirdsite where some billionaire buys the site and starts sucking down the road aka #enshittification

IMHO: #BlueSky isn't decentralised or federated. The outage on 2024-11-14 is obvious proof. It may *look* decentralised and they definitely love to outsource traffic/storage costs by claiming that running your own PDS (Personal Data Server) is somehow something federated, but that's all smoke and mirrors. You have to go deep on [1] to find "networking through Relays instead of server-to-server" as their current implementation choice. THEY run the relays. No one else.
