    It is impossible for an American president to be a "good person" it's not a good person job. As commander and chief of the US Military and steward of US hegemony you are morally gray at best. (And staying gray not going fully dark is worth it, the best we can hope for now.)

    We should ask the question: what changes would be needed for this to no longer be the case?

      @futurebird Many. I worry that part of it is geopolitical pressure. To the extent that the U.S. is willing to step back some other body must step in. That’s broadly a good thing IMO but I could see some problems if despots abuse this (as they abuse the current system)

      It might seem like a small thing, but I think we need to start with openness and honesty. Secrecy and lies are a cancer that eats at the fabric of society, no matter how well-intended. Are back-room deals, secret negotiations, or covert operations ever really necessary, or are they just expedient?
