I've maintained for awhile that three of the best things we could do would be:

    1. Universal mail-in ballots with in-person locations as fallbacks.

    2. Automatic registration when you turn 18 (or at least like selective service levels of universality: they get 97% registration), allowing day-of registration.

    3. Make day-of a national holiday to give more people an opportunity to get to a station for drop-off and give more people the ability to fall back.

in-person voting is so fucking bonkers like I'm sorry you're rolling up to some elementary school & waiting in line for 2 hours with notes in hand about which city council member is best? thanks but I'll fill out my ballot at home with 85 open browser tabs like god intended

@hrefna I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but, why in the hell do elections happen on a Tuesday instead of a Sunday?

It looks to me like a decision made on purpose to make it harder for working ppl to vote, idk

      (1) is what, among others, Colorado does.

      (2) is true in 24 states + DC at this time, per ballotpedia.

      (3) multiple states do have voting leave laws, but obviously a federal action is required for a federal holiday.

@j3j5 It was originally to make it _easier_ for people to vote: https://www.npr.org/2012/11/06/164389324/why-does-the-u-s-hold-elections-on-tuesday

But yeah, now it is a shining lesson in path dependency and how these decisions need to be revisited now and again.

Why Does The U.S. Hold Elections On Tuesday?
The answer dates back to the 19th century and involves buggies, the Sabbath and farming. (This piece initially aired October 23, 2012 on Morning Edition.)
