     @cstross Observation: the Lovecraftian mythos is nowadays only mentioned in a humorous context; Most people alive today have never heard of Cthulu except as a punchline.

     I believe this falls into the "dead horse" meta-trope, as defined by TVTropes: a trope which was once serious, but which in a modern context is only used ironically or otherwise made fun of.
