people think the current DNS infrastructure is fucked up but they don't know there used to be a single american company called web dot com that operated .org, .com, and .net, and was the sole registrar for them. also boeing managed .mil for a while for some reason

I mean most (all?) european ccTLDs are run by public entities because like of course they are. they're just DNS servers!

it's so funny how the US just HAS to do public-private partnerships. ICANN could run the root zone themselves but instead they give untold amounts of money to verisign to do it because ???
Cloudflare also is the registry for .gov. why? why does .gov even need a registry, only government entities can register there. just have a federal Thing run it?

(also ICANN was created in 98 and they made it illegal to operate a registrar and a registry as one entity. Nowadays verisign is the monopoly private company registry for .com but they don't sell to customers directly, registrars do that. They just happen to also own a registrar :) )

anyway that's fixed now because web dot com was bought by verisign so :)
