   Even the mildest criticism is treated as an attack on Israel in total, tantamount to calling for its outright destruction, which is frequently wrapped up in false accusations of antisemitism by conflating the state of Israel with the fate of all Jewish people everywhere, many of whom are opposed to it.

     Whatever rhetoric they publicly rely on, there is simply no allowance to be made for justice and dignity for the Palestinians and Israel's Arab neighbors. Any peace short of total and complete Israeli victory, the expulsion and/or destruction of the Palestinian people and permanently annexing their land, would nullify Israel as far as they're concerned. They demand we not only concede to this state of affairs but grant Israel the stamp of moral approval as well. Nothing else is acceptable.

     Ta-Nehisi Coates' critique of Israel in "The Message" and elsewhere is straightforward, factual, and in some ways, quite mild. As he dryly observed in an interview, almost no one disputes the facts on the ground but neither do they make a full-throated defense of apartheid and genocide, preferring to quibble and deflect from it instead.

     I think it's obvious by now that to many supporters of Israel, its ability to do apartheid and genocide is intrinsic to its character and even necessary to its continued existence. They will not accept an Israel that acts differently and simply expect the US and other Western nations to grant it moral and legal impunity.
