Human rights are universal. The German constitution, for example, can be changed - but not the section on human rights.

And that is why our seriousness about them is not measured by the rights we demand for ourselves - but the rights we accord others - outsiders, arrivals, migrants. That is where "who we are" becomes visible. To sit in Europe and rail against everybody else - something that seems to be mainstream now - is failing that test.
