Asa (asa@shitposter.world)'s status on Monday, 21-Oct-2024 22:33:59 JST Asa I wonder how possible it is to have a fedi server with a very high downtime, like only having it on 50%.
I would like to have my server in my own hardware but I dont have permanent internet at home and also I plan on moving homes often and also I have normal internet connections with dynamic IPs.
I could update the DNS records often so the dynamic IP shouldnt be a problem, but idk if fedi is prepared to deal with instances that are often offlinekaia likes this. -

This is doable; but why bother? A VPS is $4 a month. -

Asa (asa@shitposter.world)'s status on Tuesday, 22-Oct-2024 08:53:08 JST Asa @KuteboiCoder @sun @shibao I want my stuff running on my hardware, not in a NSA datacenter, I also want decent RAM and storage, and I want many servers of different things in the same machine. -

Cloud providers do cooperate when they are force to, but they don't snoop and rat you out to the cops for this or that on their own volition. It costs personnel hours and there's no upside, for them.
If they think you're gonna get a lawyer letter of some sort, they'd much rather just deplatform you and tell you to fuck off. And when they finally do get an NSL they can just say "Nope! Dude's gone." -

People over-estimate the NSA presence on commercial datacenters. You upload your own SSH pubkey; you upload your own SSL/TLS cert. You can even upload your own Ubuntu ISO if you don't trust the ones that are there.
If there's NSA ratfucking it's there at the key generation level - the key you generate locally - rather than at the cloud hardware. -

Sick Sun (sun@shitposter.world)'s status on Tuesday, 22-Oct-2024 11:48:11 JST Sick Sun @KuteboiCoder @shibao @asa The NSA broke into Google's datacenters illegally, repeatedly because Google didn't want to give them extralegal access. -

Asa (asa@shitposter.world)'s status on Tuesday, 22-Oct-2024 12:36:42 JST Asa @KuteboiCoder @sun @shibao they can just read RAM and CPU at the hardware level.
Didn’t they get exposed for literally having cables duplicating all the traffic in some datacenter and analyzing it? I think Edward Snowden talked about this. -

That's raw IP packets though; passive wiretaps (emphasis on passive) can't crack encryption - including very weak encryption - by definition. -

Not to say that I'm so smart and my hosting is bulletproof. What I'm actually saying is that the Bad Guys are more likely to fuck with the routing and fuck with the SSL certs at the client side. I mentioned that earlier I think -
