Why does this Cunt have AOE.

I've been fighting the Putrescent knight for almost an hour now and I've been able to deal with his bullshit combos and inability to play from range.

I've also been using a holy build so anytime I'm finally able to get a hit in after 40 minutes of waiting it does 1/3 of his health bar but his AOE is so bullshit because I can't even see it coming behind me.
