   You can see the exact moment when #Switzerland decided ramming highways into its cities was a stupid idea.

   This is the Autobahnstummel, the "highway stub," for a huge expressway, one of 3 that was supposed to enter heart of #Zürich.

   Killed by popular referendum in 1973. Direct democracy has its moments!

     Zurich went all in on transit. Trams and S-Bahn and trains. Now it is generally considered one of the world's most livable cities.

     We're still stuck with misery.

     Before they put a kibosh on the highway-building, they actually built a highway on pylons OVER a river into #Zurich.

     Madness.

     It's still there. Sihlhochstrasse.

     After this kind of thing, they decided to go another way in Switzerland.

     Problem is, in North America, we never really stopped.
