For economics fans out there, some of the details of how Putin is (mis)managing the Russian economy have parallels in Republican strategies to weaken the social safety net in the US.

You may be aware from several years back, that one of Putin's biggest political losses was when he tried to cut the social safety net, only to be met with angry Russian people, in the street... and forced to change his tune.

Ergo, some might rightly say that Putin NEEDS the war to axe Russia's social contract.
