   This mystery wire still shows a couple of volts AC on my multimeter with respect to ground, neutral, and live... even when all of the breakers to the building, including the master, are switched off.

   Disconnecting the ESP32 relay I wired into the other switch made no difference.

     @alex It's like 1 to 5 volts AC, I can't think of a reason anything would intentionally produce that voltage.
