Also, even if you have a generator, you have to keep it serviced and refresh the fuel. You cannot just leave it sitting with fuel in the tank indefinitely.
Where I work, we have a set of backup generators. We have to start them once a week for testing, and we have a PM cycle for cycling fuel in them. And petrol goes bad so much faster than diesel does, so you have to be even more on top of it.
