   why does debian have to compile zfs for every kernel when ubuntu doesnt? (at least i dont remember ubuntu ever building stuff on kernel update)

     @lamp@kitty.haus Debian (and almost everyone else) only distributes source code, binary is compiled locally via DKMS, so Debian is not officially committing a GPL violation by mixing CDDL code into it. Canonical on the other hand has the boldest lawyers who argue it's not a license violation, so only Ubuntu dare to distribute binary.
