Mark's Maxim of imperialist wars:

Every failed war of imperialism always evolves into a situation where the imperialist proclaims the defenders to be inhumane, dishonest, cheating rule breakers.

(Indeed, adopting the notion that the other side is fundamentally not fighting fair makes it easier to declare victory and go home, when the time comes.)
