I wonder how different this entire thing might have gone if the entire identity of Palestinian-ness hadn't been successfully made so taboo and the Palestinian people, the ones living in Gaza and to a lesser (but still very significant) degree the West Bank so successfully and near-totally enclosed, that almost no Israelis and almost no Americans actually KNOW any Palestinians.
It is such a weird thing to have this entire 'debate' 'issue' 'contention' 'politics' play out among deciders who LARGELY DO NOT EVEN KNOW the people they are talking about.
And then there are a few of us who are not Palestinian but who DO know. Have met. Have held. Have abided with.
And in the space of all of this it is such a weird thing to be saying, 'No, I *know* people there' and to have that be an EXTREME minority position.
Making sure you don't know them was step zero.
