I love trying to look up a way of walking between point A and B on Google Maps and getting a car-scale view of the map with some thick-ass dots that basically tell me "uhhhh just walk… somehow. somewhere. Good luck not dying tho!"

But that's true only if you're driving lol and even then barely. Mostly because Google managed to monopolize some outworldly access to APIs and other proprietary information that gives them an insane insight into traffic and roadworks info etc.
If you care about walking or cycling Google Maps are actually dogshit and OSM will have unbelievably more detail and information that is displayed in a way more useful way
