French archaeologist and historian Prosper Mérimée died #OTD in 1870.
Though Mérimée is considered part of the Romantic movement, his writing style often contains elements of Realism. He is best known for his novella Carmen (1845), which inspired Georges Bizet's famous opera of the same name. Aside from his literary achievements, Mérimée had a deep interest in history and archaeology.
