A "white-margined burrower bug" nymph (Sehirus cinctus) on boxwood (Buxus sempervirens). There were bunches of these huddled together among the leaves. From a distance, I thought they were ladybugs. Handsome creatures!

1. A fire-engine red and patent-leather black bug nymph stands squarely on a green boxwood leaf. The bug is teardrop shaped, with a pointy head and a fat abdomen. Its head and shoulders are shiny black, textured like leather. The black extends down its back, forming a short cape with broad points at its bottom giving it a W-shaped margin. The abdomen is round and red, with three short, stacked black dashes in the middle like the three-lined equals sign indicating congruence: perhaps this caped superhero's logo. The bug's head is a simple black rectangle. Globular eyes are stuck low-down on either side, like afterthoughts. From the front, emerging from either side, are two long, straight, black antennae. If we imagine the bug standing on its tail, the head would make a scary, bucket-shaped robot head from a 1950s movie. Klaatu. Barada. Nikto!
