   While Mastodon has been moving slowly in this direction over the last year or so, nothing (here or elsewhere) has managed to replace before-time Twitter for breaking news, local emergency alerts, or a getting a quick general sense of what's going on in the world.

   Yes, I know there are some people who don't want real-world information here, but I think this is a real, significant loss.

     @mattblaze they're still hard to find. Flipboard has been doing a good job highlighting them as they have been federating in batches, but finding Threads accounts to follow is really hard. Hopefully it improves over time.

     @evan Yes, I'm glad that many of them are available here now. I see it as an unqualified improvement in my experience. (This is apparently a controversial opinion, apologies if it offends).

     @mattblaze I don't suppose you're old enough to remember when publishers put out paperbacks with the email addresses of notable people, but I kind of think we need that for the fediverse.

     @evan I just follow interesting accounts when they show up in my feed. Lately more and more of them have been from Threads, etc.

     @mattblaze my understanding is that Mastodon is a more limited platform, but on Friendica here nearly half of my "friends" are RSS feeds that provide significantly better news coverage that what I ever so in my feed on freedom denying closed source social media.
