     That's precisely what I've been observing in the last 40 years.

     I would only add that voting for lesser evil is definitely not the only cause of that shift to the right.

     Dear @ghostdancer, the Overton window concept doesn't explain why this shift of opinions happen.

     If you're old enough, maybe you'll remember that a huge shift happened after the fall of the Berlin Wall, when all the dominant media jointly fabricated the artificial consensus that the neoliberalism is the only valid thought.

     And that all other political forms of thought are dinosaurian.

     @ghostdancer I think we both mostly agree.

     Since I'm not a US citizen, my views are from outside USA, while yours seem to be from inside.

     You are right: neoliberalism do present social democracies as unfeasible.

     And I suppose I'm right: the fake consensus of neoliberalism was created after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

     @hgfernan The Overton window is the name of the effect not the reason, the reason IMHO it's been a manipulation through the media the last 40 years, they've been heating the water slowly turning people every time farther to the right, it was first in USA and then exported to Europe cause the social democracies made USA not looking good and they need them to be dismantled for the sake of profits. @Jmb158

     Maybe Thatcher and Reagan were not real conservatives, but reactionaries, as they intended to replace the democratic policies.

     A Swedish conservative said: we're conservatives like Thatcher, but we don't rob children's milk.

     Thatcher and Reagan wanted to destroy the state.

     I'm European so we probably have seen the same. Reagan and Thatcher were the promoters of this trend and emptied traditional conservative ideology of content and replaced it.
