My mother had no idea on how to bank, so from 1974 to 1980, my dad (who was blind and dying - but who was man, so had a bank account) would talk her through how to write a check, make a deposit, balance the checkbook, and calculate interest. He knew he has dying and wanted her to be self-suffcient. It's why there remains a legacy of gender-based financial illiteracy among older women.
