A new beginning, right? 🤔
I'm upset, because some people reached out to me. One publically, a couple in private. Now I'm oddly thinking it was all for show (can't imagine why).
But let's start from the top (the beginning).
I learned about this development called Sharkey, which is a fork of Misskey. I particularly liked this development and was curious about it. The development seemed well established and respected within the Fediverse. The lead, at the time, was trying to promote more people to get involved, plus looking for funds so they could obtain their server.
Anyone who searches my post history, knows I can be passionate about software developments (pros and cons). For example, I used to help fund the Mozilla Foundation, around 10k annually.
Sharkey, was looking to obtain a server since they also held their flagship instance, along with their GitLab instance, and they talked about other things they had in mind. I gifted 1k for this new server. I blame myself, not anyone else, for being so trusting and having faith with the individual leading the project. But needless to say, expectations were not as advertised. For example, they never did bring back the Join Sharkey site. They did, however, decide to use the server for Minecraft (I think within the first week).
I expressed my disappointment and from experience, many developments have a following that can seem like a clique of loyal friend and followers. Sharkey was no different, and when I sounded off, it went about as I expected. Only the lead at the time, had an ego, and even reached out to the admin (I've moved since then), who may have been under the impression that if they did not silence me, they could expect no support, or possibly be de-federated.
Going forward, I would spend the better part of a year, telling people, truthfully, the software was good, and if you wanted to add to the code, to do so, but do not send them any money!
Well, no surprise to myself, the lead proved to be problematic and other people started to realize they were a jerk. They even experienced a moment where they demoted people on their flagship instance and others resigned. The internal drama got so bad, that even some of the developers were seeing red.
Ultimately, they stepped down from everywhere.
And the reason why I learned all of this, was because people started reaching out. As I said, several had done so in private, and one had done so publically. I appreciated that fact. It felt good to be vindicated.
I received a bunch of friendly message, a few follow requests, including jointly following the new lead.
But the very next morning, I noticed the lead had blocked and then unblocked me (so I was no longer following them). Thinking there was an error, I attempted to re-follow then 3x and was denied 3x. Not a big deal, but was odd.
Then I noticed a few "not so friendly" messages aimed in my direction, and oddly the new lead favored those. New beginning, right? 🤔
