In October 1994, we released On the Edge, a trading/collectible card game of rival conspiracies based on Jonathan Tweet's Over the Edge roleplaying game. If memory serves, this was the fourth CCG to be published, after Magic, Jyhad, and SuperDeck! Over the course of the coming year, On the Edge had three printings of its core set (Limited, Unlimited, and Standard); a player's guide book (Surviving on the Edge); and three expansion sets. By the summer of 1995, an explosion of new CCGs had flooded the market. It became, to put it mildly, a challenging time for game publishers, with so many products competing for shelf space and speculators hoping to make a big score on any hot item that would turn out to be both sought-after and hard to find. If a bet didn't pay off, those speculators were quick to dump unsold inventory for anything they could get (or to refuse to pay the publisher's invoice for their misplaced wager).
Atlas Games survived that challenging period, while many of our peers closed their doors for good. We pivoted to other lines, both card games (a major selling point for Lunch Money and Once Upon A Time was that they were not collectible!) and roleplaying games (with the acquisition of Ars Magica). On the Edge still had its fans, though, and game play that continued to prove engaging while so many other CCGs of its era have been forgotten. We've kept the game available, as nostalgia-seekers and new generations alike discover how much compelling game play can be had for a bargain price.
