Haven't seen it, but seems NHK is airing the TV drama "Shrink～精神科医ヨワイ～(Shrink -Psychiatrist Yowai-)" based on the manga with the same title and was asked why psychiatrists were called "shrinks".
Seems the drama explained it as US slang derived from psychiatrists "shrinking brains that had swollen with delusions" omitting the more macabre "head-shrinking" part.
Not sure if NHK thought dark humour wouldn't be understood or they just sanitized it🤔
