feldBased on my experience, 14 is about the age most people in hunting families are going to gift their child a rifle. Many states even have special hunting seasons for kids (probably because then there will be fewer people on public lands and kids will be less likely to shoot another hunter, lol)
A kid in my class in 7th or 8th grade shot another hunter during turkey season and ran away. The DNR caught up with him later, somehow he was not punished for it. Amazing.
Tried hunting with friends, but they had no muzzle control and one idiot almost shot his foot off so I stopped hunting with friends and shortly after that I stopped altogether
@Hyolobrika The caliber of that rifle is pretty ideal for deer. If you were hunting something larger you'd want a different rifle, maybe a 7mm or a 308 I'd guess.
Some states have laws restricting hunters from using semi-automatics (~20?). Some states ban all rifles and would require you to hunt with a shotgun, or at least in some counties (usually near larger populations because shotgun buckshot or slugs won't travel as far if aimed too high).
It's probably better to think of the AR15 as being a form factor that is ideal as it supports a lot of accessories. You could give it a wood stock and remove some of the accessory rails etc and it would be equally dangerous, but look less menacing to the average person.
There probably is a psychological aspect about the gun we should study though
@Hyolobrika@feld Even the RPG launcher is a hunting weapon if you're American enough! Haven't you seen that South Park episode? 😂 (The form-factor/accessories being widely available is a good point though)
