@microblogc Yeah, back then you could order HP printer protocol manuals for free! I got the PCL and PJL manuals. It was fun to be able to make my dad's HP LJ4 display read whatever I wanted it to.

I also wrote a program to print ascii documents 4 up on an HP InkJet to save paper.

@encthenet I remember tinkering with the manuals of my printer and the driver-editor of wordperfect to make my own fonts.

As someone who grew up in that time period, and learned to program C from the Borland Turbo C++ user manual, it truly is a lost art form.

This is also one of the reasons I've stayed with #FreeBSD as well as it has good documentation, and people care about it and try to keep it up to date.

Attached: 4 images The latest @vkc@linuxmom.net video is about the lost art of computer manuals: https://tinkerbetter.tube/w/f7NFFTdHMUHTLdgC7JU2Mw https://youtu.be/4lUiUQOvRHQ (22 min) And I thought "wait, didn't @mntmn@mastodon.social's MNT Reform have a great Operator Handbook"? So I went and looked it up, and damn! It's even better than I thought. Not only does it explain how to charge the laptop and turn it on. It introduces you to Linux, has exploded-view drawings of components, includes schematics and even a bill of materials! Magnificent. https://mntre.com/docs-reform.html
