   It absolutely guts me to see artists posting like “please commission me, I’m so desperate for money, my cat will die if I don’t come up with $100 this week” and then they charge $20 for what is clearly at least $200 worth of art that would take a minimum of several hours to make

   that is self defeating! you are not going to make it up on volume! there are only so many people on the lookout for commissioned art and most of them have more than $20!

     @condret you are looking at this completely backwards.

     Art is, by definition, a low volume, high value specialty good that is completely non-fungible. It does not matter how low you set the price, you will still get roughly the same amount of commissions as if you set it at what it’s actually worth in terms of time and skill. Lowering the price does not cause more commissions to appear.

     One commission at $200 or one commission at $20, for the same amount of effort.

     @0xabad1dea @condret art is semi-fungible. Take prints, for example. An individual piece may or may not be non-fungible.
