I bought a refurb'd laptop for $360 *Canadian* and put Linux Mint on it. It's very early days, but so far, it does everything a $2000 macbook would do. The camera and screen aren't as nice, but that's about it so far.
I'm never buying a new laptop again. It's a scam.
