   reading a post on a deal site for computers. people excited about the "insane deal" of a mpb m3 for 3800$.
   
   i'm not sure how one can get excited about that. it's the price of a used camry. maybe there's a use-case besides wallet-flexing

     there are nice things like the control freak cook top where the people who own them just have the income to sustain spending 1.5k$ on shit

     AFAIK, many use them to run these image generation models — on these machines it's possible to use main RAM instead of dedicated video memory as everything is tightly integrated, it's not as performant, but in this case it's actually cheaper than a machine with equal amount of video RAM, and especially a laptop.

     @icedquinn you're putting it lightly imho. there was a point where i liked apple machines (circa 2012-2015) but this time has passed. i get just as much done on my thinkpad and if i choose the top of the line from lenovo i maybe pay 1800$ with enough headroom for 5-8 years.
     
     i won't judge someone for their choices, but from a practical standpoint it simply doesn't compute

     @icedquinn @m0xee there was a point in my career where i made monies that could allow me to make said purchases but i never did. there was one time when i did "splurge" on a threadripper system but felt so guilty about it i returned it all. these days i find computers in the trash, e-cyclers, or i trade stuff for them to build my lab. i don't feel guilty in this way and i've got a pretty respectable setup, although possibly prone to a house-fire 😓
