   Happy Women’s Equality Day. It’s a dark time to be a feminist. The gains of the Second Wave have come under attack: it’s newly contested whether women belong in public life, whether our bodies are our destinies, whether the prerogatives of adult life are women’s prerogatives.

     Being a feminist in this moment often feels like conducting a kind of remedial education. I’m newly aware of how fragile and conditional women’s gains are, how easily they can be lost. Some of them already have.
