I always used to believe that LotR was a story of heroism, with a earnestness that could only exist in a previous age prior to post modernism and the current decay we live in.

But I've been re-reading it recently. And it's become apparent that LotR is not set in an age of heros. It's set in the ruins of those heros. There's constant lament over the destruction of previously great works. And the end and deconstruction of all things. even the goal is that the ring be "unmade".
